Our organization is only as good as our volunteers are, and fortunately for us, we have the best. Every year, when we elect new members to our Board of Directors, I am inspired by their dedication, enthusiasm, and a shared vision to ensure all who reside in Middlesex County live in a healthy, vibrant, inclusive, and thriving community.

At our annual meeting yesterday morning, we welcomed five new board members: James J. Crawford, Derrick Gibbs, Jr., Eric Kane, Lori Lodge, and Jessica Griffin Scheff.

A different idea about being fit in the New Year

So I have this new Fitbit that I inherited from my oldest son who got it as a Christmas gift but didn’t really want it.  I’m your classic beginning of the New Year let’s get in better shape American.  So far so good for the first two weeks!

The Fitbit claims to do a lot of things – measure sleep time and quality, calories consumed and burned, water intake, etc.  But mostly it is useful for tracking the number of steps you take in a day with 10,000 or more being the goal.  It even gives you progress updates throughout the day and vibrates wildly when you achieve your goal!

Myth vs. Reality

I have to admit to being terribly frustrated by the myth that most of the monies raised by United Ways across the country go to administrative expenses. I hear this over and over even though it has never been true.  People often perpetuate this myth via social media and by sharing emails filled with erroneous information.

No strings attached.

What should I do when a beggar asks me for money?  Is that person holding the sign that says they are homeless and a veteran really homeless and a veteran?

My oldest son and I recently visited New Haven for the day.  We ate amazing sushi, pizza and pastry during our visit.  Yes, food was a key to the day's success and it was my first opportunity to try Pepe’s.  I’m a new fan and it is worth the trip!  But we also spent a few hours in the wonderful (and free!) Yale University Art Gallery.  Oh, did I mention it was free?
