"Why are you collecting school supplies, they aren't very expensive you know"…
Hi everyone – my name is Eric Kane, and I am the Vice Chair of the Middlesex United Way Young Leaders Society steering committee. I was asked this question last year as the team was promoting our annual Stuff-a-Backpack fund raiser and school supply drive.
On the surface, sure, there is some truth to the cost of school supplies, compared to many other items our children need. However, as I thought more about it, it became clear to me that the cost is not what's important, yet the impact these supplies make surely is. The pressure our local families face as they prepare their children for the upcoming year is tremendous – buying new clothes, shoes, before/after care, extra-curricular activities; the list goes on and on. Often forgotten is basic school supplies – the very thing our kids need most to succeed in the classroom. It is overwhelming to me how much pens, pencils, notebooks, and backpacks help in making our students feel comfortable at school. With these basic supplies, they no longer have to worry about how they will take notes in class, carry their books, or complete homework assignments. Their focus is now on the teacher, the lesson at hand, and getting the most out of what our great school system has to offer.
With that said, I encourage you to join us August 18, 5:30pm, at the Canoe Club for our 3rd annual fund raiser. We're giving it a little different name this yr (Board games & Backpacks) but the intent to collect school supplies has not changed! Why a different name? This year we thought it would be fun to have a 'throwback' Thursday theme – games, cards, coloring, and entertainment from when we were kids! Light Hors d'oeuvres will be served.
Feel like making an even bigger impact? Get your co-workers involved and host a collection at work. Help us make this our largest event yet! I hope to see you there.
