Middlesex United Way and our partners are working towards the goal of increasing the economic self-sufficiency of individuals and families.
The entire community benefits when individuals and families are financially stable. We work with partners who provide job and literacy training, provide basic needs, enable senior citizens to remain independent and in their homes, and empower individuals who are disabled to thrive.
United Way is a partner with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites to help working people file their taxes and ensure they are receiving back all the money they have earned through tax credits. Middlesex United Way was a VITA site in 2010.
We also support United Way 2-1-1, the free 24-hour information and referral helpline that is available throughout the state. 2-1-1 is a partnership between the state of Connecticut and all Connecticut United Ways.

What is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal income tax credit for working individuals & families with modest incomes. In some cases the EITC may exceed the amount of taxes owed, and in this case, a person is eligible for a tax refund. Unfortunately this credit often goes unclaimed simply because people are unaware of it. Volunteers, trained by the IRS, prepare taxes for free, saving individuals up to $150 in tax preparation services.
In 2010, VITA sites helped more than 200 people file their taxes and receive back a total of $362,540 in refunds. That's earned money getting back into the hands of working people.
