It's your money! Free tax preparation by IRS trained and certified volunteers is available in Middletown to ensure that working individuals and families are filing for the tax credits they have earned. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is available for people whose income is below $50,000 a year.

The new Connecticut State Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for low-income, working individuals and families takes effect this year. This means that working families could receive even more money back this tax season. VITA volunteers are trained to ensure that people are filing for all of the tax credits they have earned, including the federal EITC, new state EITC, and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Appointments are available between January 24 - April 11 in the evenings and on Saturdays and must be scheduled through United Way 2-1-1. Simply dial 2-1-1 on your phone from anywhere in Connecticut.

There are two downtown Middletown sites offering free tax preparation -- at Middlesex United Way, 100 Riverview Center, Suite 230 and NEAT, at 654 Main Street.

Individuals should bring a blank check from their checking account for direct deposit of their refund. Direct deposit is the quickest way to receive the refund, usually within one week. For those who do not have an account, you can ask about setting one up before a scheduled appointment with a tax preparer.

When attending their pre-scheduled appointment, individuals should bring: valid photo ID; social security cards or ITIN; income documentation from all employers; birth dates for everyone in the family; interest and dividend statements; total amount paid for child care; a copy of last year’s Federal and State income tax returns, if available; and the current year’s tax package if you received one.

In 2011, local VITA sites helped 350 residents of Middlesex County file their taxes for free. Those who qualified for refunds or tax credits received an average of $1,600 back. The total amounted to $450,000 – that’s money getting back into the hands of working people who have earned it. Of those served, there were an additional 165 dependents, mostly children, who were impacted by the program.

VITA is a free program offered by the federal government. The local Middletown VITA sites are coordinated by Middlesex United Way and the Middlesex Coalition for Children. Dial 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment.

Campaign Coordinators Share How They Live United at the 2011 Coordinator Training in September:

Middlesex United Way is a locally based organization dedicated to strengthening lives, helping people, and improving community conditions in the fifteen towns in Middlesex County. With our partners, we work to create real, lasting change. We support community programs and initiatives that help those in need and also prevent problems from happening in the first place.

United Way believes that everyone should have the opportunities for a good life, and that the building blocks for that life are education, income, health, and housing. Our goals and work in the community are centered around these key areas, our four pillars of advancement. You need a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family now and into retirement, good health, and a safe, decent and affordable place to live.

LIVE UNITED is our call to action for the entire community. It's about working together to achieve more than any single person or organization could alone. And we are advancing the common good in Middlesex County by providing ways for people to give, advocate, and volunteer in support of our work.

Middlesex United Way also has a Volunteer Center, to support the volunteer needs of the community. The Volunteer Center organizes United Way Day of Caring activities and matches groups of volunteers with meaningful projects at nonprofit organizations. We also have an online database of one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities at Volunteer Solutions.

In collaboration with the State of Connecticut, United Way supports 2-1-1, a 24-hour, 7-day a week toll-free number to dial for information and referral. If you or someone you know needs helps, the first number to dial is 2-1-1. Or visit them online at www.211ct.org.

We invite you to LIVE UNITED with us - to get involved by giving, advocating, and volunteering for the causes and issues that you care about and want to help improve. It takes all of us working together to create a brighter future.

LIVE UNITED is a credo, a goal, a way of life. It's the idea that we are all connected and interdependent...because when you reach out a hand to one you can influence the condition of all. That's what it means to LIVE UNITED.

A simple and rewarding way to make an immediate impact is to organize a food or diaper drive at your company or organization, in your neighborhood or school, or with any group.

Collect nonperishable food items or disposable diapers from employees, customers, clients, friends, family members and neighbors. United Way will ensure that all items are distributed to organizations in your town helping people in need.

This year, diaper drives are the focus for United Way Day of Action on June 21, the longest day of the year. We'll kick off the drives on May 3 at the annual Campaign Awards Breakfast, and end on June 21 with public collections and drop-off locations.

Middlesex United Way is a volunteer-driven organization. You and your employees, friends, colleagues, and neighbors can personally help lead the way by joining one of our committees. Opportunities exist to support fund raising, marketing, investment, finance, the Women's Initiative and the Young Leaders Society.

Or consider joining one of our Community Impact Teams - Education, Income, Health or Housing. Volunteers on these teams are responsible for developing measurable community level outcomes and making critical funding decisions in our focus areas.
