Middlesex United Way: Several area groups to be awarded for community efforts

Middlesex United Way has an exciting lineup of upcoming events. We’re working on not one, but three, fun events and we’d love to tell you about them.

We will honor local companies and their employees for their support of Middlesex United Way at our annual campaign awards breakfast May 9 at the Middletown Elks Lodge at 8 a.m.

Tickets are $20 and include a hot breakfast. Every year, this proves to be a fun morning, and we will be giving out a variety of awards honoring companies that achieve 75 percent employee participation in the United Way campaign, companies which have experienced five consecutive years of growth in their campaigns, and much more.

Our top awards will be handed out to the following companies and individuals:

Liberty Bank, The Corporate Spirit Award; Sandy Phillips, Barbara Thompson and Kelly Haeckel of Middlesex Health, Coordinators of the Year Award; Mike Weaver of Standard-Knapp, the Leadership Award; St. Vincent de Paul, the Funding Partner Achievement Award; and Clinton Youth and Family Services, Social Media Shout Out Award.

The event will be filled with great food and lots of appreciation for the local people and organizations who support our community and Middlesex United Way. If you are interested in attending please email Maria Wood at maria.wood2middlesexunitedway.org or give us a call at 860-346-8695.

If mini golf, good food, and networking is more up your alley, I encourage you to join the Young Leaders Society at their annual Putts for a Purpose Charity Miniature Golf Tournament June 6 at Torza’s Golf in Cromwell. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will feature one round of miniature golf, dinner, drinks, and the opportunity to network, all for a worthy cause.

All the proceeds raised from the event will benefit Middlesex County schools for the purchase of needed school supplies. Each $30 ticket includes a round of miniature golf, dinner and one draft beer. Following the success of last year’s event, The Middlesex United Way Young Leaders Society has worked hard to ensure another successful outing.

Next up on the calendar is the 11th annual Power of the Purse, hosted by the Women’s Initiative, June 20 at the Elks Club in Middletown. Their signature annual event features a silent auction, dinner and entertainment.

The fundraiser will feature handbags, totes, purses and more: a tribute to the name Power of the Purse. Proceeds are collected and distributed to strengthen the lives of women and children in Middlesex County. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by visiting wipop.eventbrite.com.

The Women’s Initiative is inviting you to celebrate with them by making a cash donation in addition to your ticket purchase. Donations of $100 or more will be listed the event program under Friends of the Women’s Initiative. We would also like to thank Liberty Bank and Middlesex Health, both generous sponsors of this event for the last several years.

If you cannot attend, but wish to contribute a tax-deductible gift, or if you wish to contribute an item to the auction, please email traci.raicik@middlesexunitedway.org.

All of these events are open to the public, and we hope that you join us in the spirit of community and giving back.

Kevin Wilhelm is president and CEO of the Middletown-based Middlesex United Way.
