Or, save the paper and just text the word “family” to 700700 and get a free FamilyWize Prescription Discount Card sent to your cell phone by text. Then simply show the text to your pharmacist and they will automatically apply the FamilyWize discount to the cost of your medicine.

FamilyWize, a free discount prescription card, is helps residents in all 15 towns of Middlesex County save money on their prescriptions, thanks to a partnership with Middlesex United Way. Many local pharmacies are participating in the program including Osco, Stop & Shop, Rite Aid, Walmart, and Walgreens. The cards are available at Middlesex United Way or you may download a free discount prescription card here.

The FamilyWize card save individuals and families an average of 20% on eight out of ten prescription medications. Simply present the card and your prescription at a participating pharmacy and you will receive either the FamilyWize discounted price or the pharmacy's customary retail price, whichever is lower. All family members living in the same household can use one card.

Anyone can use the FamilyWize card, regardless of age, income, or employment level. The card is not intended to replace health insurance but it can offer immediate savings to people who have no health insurance. It can also help you save money during deductible periods and for prescriptions that are not covered by your health insurance, Medicare or other benefit plans. The FamilyWize card does not reduce the cost of medications for which you have a co-pay.

Even if you already have insurance that covers your prescription drugs the FamilyWize prescription card can still benefit you. This program can be used to obtain savings on prescription drugs that are excluded by your insurance plan or are not covered because you have exceeded your insurance plan's maximum limits. In some instances, you might find that the FamilyWize prescription card's price is lower than your program's co-payment amount, but not usually. In addition, if your plan does not offer you a drug card and you are reimbursed after each transaction, you may be able to use the FamilyWize to lower your out-of-pocket expenses.

Middlesex United Way is helping to spread the word about the FamilyWize cards as part of our ongoing effort to increase the economic self-sufficiency of individuals and families in Middlesex County. Since Middlesex United Way has been distributing the cards in 2009, Middlesex County residents have saved more than $200,000 on their prescriptions through the program (see the real-time tracker at right for exact amount!). Across Connecticut, consumers have saved more than $1,000,000.
