President & CEO of Middlesex United Way
Shawonda comes to Middlesex United Way after decades of service with nonprofits in both Connecticut and New York. She served most recently as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford. Before that, Shawonda spent more than 24 years at the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club where she grew up and was a program member. She was instrumental in securing important funding for a variety of programs and was chosen to speak on behalf of Boys & Girls Club of America at a congressional hearing to successfully seek more than one billion dollars in federal funding to benefit youth programs across the country. Shawonda was recently inducted into the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club Alumni Hall of Fame for her years of dedication and service. She's in good company! Several celebrities from the entertainment and sports world are distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame honorees. Shawonda is an avid moviegoer with her favorites being horror and psychological thrillers. She loves to read (especially James Patterson books) and travel. Shawonda lives in Middletown with her son.
Director of Development
Liz joined Middlesex United way in April 2022 with over 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising. She has worked extensively with both volunteers and corporations. Liz has a keen eye for creating partnerships that can have a positive and lasting impact on the community. Before joining Middlesex United Way Liz served as Director of Community Engagement for MARC Community Resources and as Corporate Partnerships Manager for United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. She lives in East Haddam and owns a bookstore along the Connecticut shoreline with her husband, who just happens to be the captain of the “Love Boat.”
Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator
Maria has served as Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator for Middlesex United Way since 2018. She plays a big role in the day-to-day operations of Middlesex United Way and is the point person for those looking to join our team of volunteers. Before joining United Way, Maria moved to Connecticut from Baltimore. She lives with her husband and two dogs in Manchester. In her free time, she enjoys reading, going to the beach, and spending time with her pets.
Loaned Executive, sponsored by Middlesex Health
Audrey has been an important member of the Middlesex United Way team for over a decade. She is part of the Loaned Executive Program made possible by the generosity of Middlesex Health. With more than 40 years of experience at Middlesex Health, Audrey has built important relationships within the community and helps assist our team with fundraising and campaign efforts throughout the year. Audrey is quite the adventurous traveler! She has been to every state in the U.S. except Hawaii and Alaska! Audrey lives in Middletown and has two daughters and three grandchildren.
Communications and Marketing Director
William joined Middlesex United Way in the summer of 2022 with over a decade of experience in broadcasting and communications. He began his career as a News Producer at WFSB and later moved to WTNH. He currently serves on the board of the Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation and volunteers with the Durham Fair Association. William lives in Durham, where he enjoys working in his yard and running with friends.
Director of Finance & Administration
Dee is currently the longest serving member of the Middlesex United Way team with more than 25 years as an employee. She oversees the financial aspects of the nonprofit and has become a trusted partner to Middlesex United Way’s corporate and individual donors, community agencies, and staff. She lives in Middlefield with her husband and two cats: Dodger and Dakota.
Tracy joined the Middlesex United Way team in the summer of 2018. She assists the Director of Finance in reviewing and documenting all money coming into and out of the nonprofit. Tracy lives in Middletown with her husband, Rich, and her dog, Chloe.
Community Impact Director
Will joined the Middlesex United Way in Summer 2022. He brings years of experience with grant management, community engagement, project management, public health, volunteerism, and more. As Community Impact Director he will manage the Community Impact Committee and the Community Impact Grants, working closely with the community partners. Will lives in New Haven with his rescue pup, Winston; they both enjoy hiking, pizza, and making friends.
